Any extra tips on keeping Chinese Cresteds skin itch free?

I'm caring for two right now (hairless ones), one's skin has been itching him a lot since fall began , we live in N.Y.

Can't find a flea on him, so far I put him on benadryl twice daily 12 mg for his weight of 12 lbs. for 7 days and now brought it down to once daily.

I've been spraying him daily with a vets approved skin conditioner but he is still it abit uncomfortable when I pet his back but far better than he was originally.

I also put neosporin on one hotspot he bit open and it's healed up good the past week but he still tries to get at it.

I have his body covered now with a sweatsuit so he can't get at the spot again and bite it open.

Does anyone familiar with this rare breed have anything else I can try that may work out better?

I really don't want to keep him on the benadryl to much longer.

I read that lanolin is not good for them (allergict to) so will be checking the products today to see if it contains that as an ingredient.

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Any extra tips on keeping Chinese Cresteds skin itch free?
HI! I have a Chinese Crested.

This breed is very prone to allergies, its possible it could be a food allergy. What is the current diet?

Contact allergies are possible too.. do you have wool carpet? Does he roll around in the grass alot?

It could also be some kind of skin infection going on.

Is his skin dry and flakey? That will cause itching as well. There are lotions you can use.. I have used Curel Ultra healing, Olay quench, and eucerin with no problems on my cresteds.. there are a few products I have ordered online which work well too:

this lady has emu oil lotion, which I LOVE

this lady makes body wash, lotions, and astrigent for the crested skin

If you have any more questions, please join us at www.crestedsrock.com there are people there who have more experience with skin issues than me. They would be more than willing to help!

edited to add, it could just be the time of year, the air is less humid and drying his skin. A humidifyer in the home may help. Adding some salmon or cod liver oil to his diet is good for skin too.

Another good skin conditioner, if he's willing to sit still for about 10-15 mins, straight out of the warm tub, while his pores are still open, put some olive oil on his skin, and wrap him up in a warm towel. Snuggle with him in the towel and let his skin absorb the oils.

You can also exfoliate skin to slough off the dead, dry skin. I use either a salt or sugar scrub. No need to buy expensive ones, such as the ones at bath and body.. you can get an inexpensive jar at walmart. I have also made my own sugar scrub using sugar and olive oil... just mix for the desired consitency, typically half and half.

Drink 6-8 eight ounce glasses of water per day, more if exercising vigorously.

Moisturize with Aveeno Daily Moisturizing Lotion immediately after drying off after showering. Apply to entire body.
Reply:you can go to wal mart and get some stuff call aveno oatmeal and take a bath in it pour it when u run your water buy the lotion also put this on three times a day and you will see a change all of this is in the pharmacy section
Reply:yes a bath in water and bathbeads with oil.
Reply:Goldbond cream! or there is the St-Ives Hydration cream that works wonders for me. Vaseline has a good hydrating cream as well...there are so many nowadays. good luck!
Reply:Dry skin types have to be extremely careful to protect their skin. Yogurt-honey combination helps dry skin. Make an egg pack with a yolk, a teaspoon of honey, a tablespoon of milk powder. This is beneficial to dry skin types. There are many helpful tips to cure dry skin at http://useinfo-dryskin.blogspot.com/

My dog had flakey skin and is constantly itching. How do I treat that?

Has your dog also put on some weight but seems to be eating normal amounts of food? How old is your dog, what brand are you feeding and what breed is your dog? The answer to your question can only be answered with more information from you.

Most of the time it is the dog food being fed. Changing to a high quality food will sometimes stop this. I feel a hypoallergenic diet of Pinnacle trout and sweet potatoes. Their is NO corn, or wheat, and it is not cheap, but your dog and you will be happier in the long run..AND your dog will actually require less food with a high quality diet. So it will last longer.

I have a ****** who is always itching, so I finally broke down and bought this dog food from my local feed store, my dogs have been on it for about 2 weeks and I have already seen a HUGE difference.. I wont go back to anything else.. I tried just about all of them.. Holistic is the way to go in my opinion.. And I feed 9 dogs and it lasted me longer than the proplan I had them on..

Contact me if you like

PS it's not mange.. sheesh I don't understand people.. Mange is very different and they lose TONS of hair.. Try food first and then if it doesn't get better, have your vet check her for thyroid problems..Its a simple blood test.

My dog had flakey skin and is constantly itching. How do I treat that?
Mange most likely. Or a reaction to a shampoo maybe or fleas can cause the skin reaction also.

Get to vet to get treatment Mange will get out of hand quickly and can spread to other pets.
Reply:What do you bathe your dog in? Your dog could be allergic to the shampoo or even her food. You should take her to the vet.
Reply:First stop. Vet, make sure it isn't a medical condition such as a staph infection or allergies.

If everything checks out fine there, then look at diet and overbathing. Dogs should be bathed no more than once every six months, unless obviously dirty or directed to do so by the vet.

Try changing to a high quality food. That will also help.

Nothing you find at a grocery store is going to be a good food. High quality foods can be found at large pet store chains, or online. A couple of foods I like are Nutro Natural, Innova, and Cannidae.

There are other high quality dog foods. Here's how to spot them:

A high quality food will have little or no fillers such as corn, wheat or soy. These aren't very digestable for dogs, and are common food related allergens. Since you were seeing corn meal in the first few ingredients, those are not high quality foods. Foods list ingredients by content, with the ingredient it contains most of at the top.

A high quality food will not contain BHT, BHA or Ethoxyquin, these are all chemical preservatives that have been linked to cancer.

A high quality food will not contain by-products of any kind. Meat meals are ok as long as the source of the meat is listed, such as Chicken Meal.

A high quality diet should have meat as at least the first ingredient., and be made from human grade ingredients. Foods that don't use human grade ingredients often get their ingredients from less than desirable sources, such as meat from animals that were diseased, or euthanized.

There is another diet option other than dog food. Some people choose to feed a raw diet. This involves feeding the dog raw meaty bones and organ meat. However it is not as simple as throwing a couple chicken bones in a bowl everyday. If you wish to feed this type of diet, do lots and lots of research first. Switching to this diet without knowing what your doing can lead to nutritional problems for your dog. I'll give you some links as a starting point in research if you are interested in this type of diet.

Reply:I would take it to the vet and have it looked at. It could be fleas or just dry skin or allergic to something in it's food. You never know what it could be.
Reply:Flaky skin can be caused by any number of things. Your best bet is to visit your vet to determine the cause so that you can begin treating properly rather than taking a shot in the dark. You don't mention any redness or inflammation, but constant itching usually result in these two conditions. Flaky skin usually equates to dry skin which can be brought about by over-bathing. Flea bite dermatitis usually is more localized to an area that becomes itchy and inflamed resulting in staph infection. Allergies to food, whether its to corn, wheat, chicken, beef or any other ingredient, can also cause itching but this again should create red, inflamed skin. Contact allergy to grass and other plant/ground covering could be a culprit. But, your veterinarian is the only one who can really tell you how to treat the problem and then, only after he has examined your dog and determined what the actual cause is.

Lamb and rice is a good quality dog food formulated to promote healthy skin and coats in dogs. When selecting the brand to feed your dog, look to see that real lamb is the number one ingredient. I used to breed Miniature Schnauzers and still have a large number of animals. I have found this formula to be the best for promoting healthy skin and coats overall.

Good luck with your dog.
Reply:Many times dry, itchy, and flaky skin is caused by the dog not receiving the proper amounts of omega fatty acids in the food you feed.As stated above,a premium food such as Innova or Canidae can help with skin problems.Another thing to try is supplementing your dogs meals with omega rich foods.Canned salmon is a good source of omegas, that alot of people feed their dogs.

Increasing the omegas helps with the skin, and it also makes the coat soft and shiny. In many cases it will even reduce the amount your dog sheds.

I started giving my 80 pound lab 1/2 cup of canned salmon with her morning feeding about 1 year ago.It has mad a big difference in her skin, coat, and shedding.
Reply:Ask the vet for a shampoo with oatmeal
Reply:Beat olive oil and 1 raw egg, let him lick it up. Do it 4 days a week

I have a case of mild hives. Is there anything I can do to stop itching and soothe skin with no medication?

I only have three spots with hives/ raised bumps: my left hand index finger, my left hand pinky knuckle, and the area near my elbow.

Any suggestions?

I have a case of mild hives. Is there anything I can do to stop itching and soothe skin with no medication?
Since its only a few hives you could just ignore them. If they dont go away after a day take a benadryll. I know its medicine but it works wonders.

If you cant ignore them you could try soaking your hand in an oatmeal bath.....you can buy it at the drugstore I think aveno makes one. Since its only your hand and elbow you only need to fill a large bowl with water and add the oatmeal mix.....read the instructions on the package. This works for my hives but I take benadryll too.
Reply:If you don't have any anti-itch lotion then cold water and avoid touching the area if at all possible.
Reply:Benadryl
Reply:Cold water compresses and will help relieve itching. Calamine lotion can soothe the skin.
Reply:Hives is a skin allergic response to just about anything. It appears to be especially related to problems associated with the Gallbladder. Google hives +TCM or +alternative or +naturopath to be directed to very informative websites such as this one:

For the itching: Aloe vera gel. Calendula spray. Calamine lotion. Fluocinide (lidocaine). Sayman Salve (sulphur %26amp; petroleum jelly). Honey. Cool compresses of water or refrigerated tea made from red clover and peppermint feel really great.
Reply:Soak them in Aveeno water bath (oatmeal based), it will help sooth the itch.

oleander

Does anyone know if your skin itches when you are losing weight?

This may sound stupid, but I have lost 12 pounds in 3 weeks and wondering if my skin could be itching because of it. (I know a wound itches when it is healing)

Does anyone know if your skin itches when you are losing weight?
Never heard of that happening.
Reply:Umm,no.
Reply:I never heard that before.
Reply:I have not heard of that. By chance, are you taking any diet pills?
Reply:I don't think so. You may just have dry skin or be allergic to something. Sometimes your body reacts to change. Like when I started drinking alot of milk my nails had this tiny brown line on them.
Reply:Mine doesn't. Put on some lotion, why don't you.
Reply:I don't think so, remember this is winter and your skin could just be dry... Maybe your clothes are too loose and rubbing on your skin... check out other reasons.
Reply:Ive never heard that before but i can tell you that when you are working out %26amp; you are itchy, its from blood circulation %26amp; that you are out of shape
Reply:Put some cream on...because itching can cause stretch marks...So prevent it by putting iching oil or anyhing that can prevent stretch marks..
Reply:If you are indoors during cold weather, the heated air could be drying your skin and making you itch. Are you drinking enough water? Be sure and take in the proper amounts of the right fats, like avacado, walnuts and olive oil s for example. Sometimes a light diluted vinegar rinse, 1/2 cup to a quart of water will help to restore your skin's natural acid balance. Keep up the fresh fruits and vegatables, and go easy on the salt. Best wishes.
Reply:Actually, i've lost the same amount of weight in three weeks and im itching like crazy! I've never itched prior to my weight loss, its not the weather and definately not my diet. My boyfriend said the same thing was happening to him when he lost weight. Im also noticing im only itching wear i have a lot of fat;not all over. my BF said it will eventually go away, its like a phase of some sort.

I have severe excema on my hands. What can I get to stop the intense itching and cracked skin.?

a prescirption from a medical Doctor.

I have severe excema on my hands. What can I get to stop the intense itching and cracked skin.?
same. i went to my dermo, and he perscribed a cream. until then, use plenty of lotion, and check 4 alergies. your excema could be caused by a milk or wheat alergy.
Reply:I have the same problem and I have found that juice from an aloe plant helps but if you don't have the aloe plant use oatmeal. Don't laugh it works. Take 1/4 cup of oatmeal and 2-3 tablespoons warm water, mix well and apply to the hands. Leave on for 5 minutes, rinse with cool water, not hot. Heat makes it worse. Can use as many times a day as needed.
Reply:My sister in law has excema, go see a physician and ask him about a shot (i don't know what it's called), it's worked wonders for her!!
Reply:There is an Eczema medicated lotion called DERMAREST which is very effective. My son has it and it has helped him quite a lot. It is a 1% Hydrocortisone cream and you can find it in any drug store. Apply it 2-3 times everyday for 4-5 days and you will feel better.
Reply:The cause of eczema is not known but aggravating factors include hands that are in constant contact with soap and water, harsh household products and some vegetable juices. If a physician does not specify a particular regimen, Arbonne has some recommendations that might alleviate some of your discomfort. The ABC (Arbonne Baby Care) line is the most gentle and perfect for skin conditions as it is the most sensitive, pure, safe, and beneficial. They have a wash, lotion, body oil, etc. that are botanically-based and pH correct, dermatologist tested, non-sensitizing, non-irritating, and formulated without nut oils. They're formulated with shea butter which is a unique botanical that soothes, moisturizes and protects skin. With its key components of vitamin A and E, all types of skin (including sensitive) can benefit from shea butter’s supreme, conditioning effects. Its non-toxic makeup and skin-tolerable trait make it ideal for use on sensitive skin.

They also have a great intelligence conditioning oil and rejuvenating cream that can be used whenever you feel it's necessary to relieve the discomfort and itching. I would be happy to send you a free sample to try it out if you would be open to giving it a try.
Reply:Neem Oil works BEST
Reply:I found a perfect solution for you to consider: 1. Taking 3-4 baths a week with 2 cups of ACV[The inexspensive stuff in the grocery store is just as good for this application] - soak

for 30 minutes then shower for a minute in cold water

2. 3 times a day, 30 minutes before meals to take a tablespoon of [raw from a health food store]ACV in a tepid glass of water. Add a little honey or blackstrap molasses for taste[I add cinnamon].
