Itching, flaking, bleeding skin from my ring?

I took off my wedding ring (sterling silver band) a couple days ago when my finger started itching, and I noticed there was a red, flaky patch of skin there. It kept itching, and last night I put some antihistimine ointment on it before bed. Today it's even worse and now it started bleeding.

What's wrong with my finger? How can I heal it? I've been wearing my wedding ring constantly for over a year and a half and never had any problems until now.

I'm into visual aids, so take a look and give me your best advice : )

Hi Sarah. Make sure to remove your ring while doing dishes or washing your hands. To me (not a doctor) it looks like irritation from a chemical under your ring. The other answers tell you how to get rid of the irritation. Just don't get anything trapped under it. You could also clean the inside of the ring to remove silver tarnish which may have formed after a year and a half. (This would prove that the ring is actually silver! :-) )
Reply:No big deal! They are pretty small cuts. Buy some polysporin at wallmart %26amp; that shell heal it up completely in about 4 days. You have really long nails have you ever thought about getting a french manicure?

PS its probably caused from to much friction with the ring against the skin. It could happen during washing the dishes, taking a shower, or even sleeping and you won't even feel it happening. Best thing to prevent this is only to wear the ring when you are not doing labour or sleeping. Afterall your skin needs air!
Reply:ewww... ummm.... uhhh... maybe its an alergy?
Reply:it's caused from water under the ring

make sure you blow on it to dry it when you get it wet

i know, i have a very wide band %26amp; did the same thing

now i have several pretty ring holders in kitchen, bath %26amp; bed rooms %26amp; never put my ring anywhere but on them

17 years %26amp; haven't lost it yet !

DID get rid of the problem.
Reply:well it might be a fake ring but i think you might have had more rapid results if you've had it for a year now. Well sometimes people are allergic to thinks they weren't to before but then it goes away maybe go to a Doctor or an allergist.
Reply:I have a wide wedding band also, white gold. I get the same thing. It is a contact dermatitis most likely. It can happen from water being trapped between the ring and the finger. It is also a possibility that you had a piece of dirt or something else under the ring creating even more friction. Just use a triple antibiotic on the cuts and cover if needed to stay clean. I would leave the ring off for a few days, until it heals.
Reply:It could be psoriasis because of the dry, winter weather. I get some red, dry patches of skin during this time of the year. Make sure to take off your ring when washing your hands and apply cocoa butter on it so it stays moist. Palmer's Cocoa Butter is a great choice and you can purchase it at any drug store.
